FACADE is a broad photographic survey of images shot in many different cities around the world of Modernist facades of various buildings. The series originated whilst travelling in 2007 but has remained a source of inspiration during many subsequent travels.
The series captures a very specific period of architecture with the emergence of a new architectural style. In the mid twentieth century a fresh and new architectural language emerged as construction technology evolved from largely masonry to steel and glass, bringing on a vibrant period of architectural freedom and expression heralding an entirely new architectural movement; ‘Modernism’.
This style and technology of building propagated rapidly around the world and there are now several landmark examples of this architecture globally. This series explores some of the most iconic but also most quirky examples of this style.
Images have been shot in North and South America, Australia, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
These images shot mostly since 2007 ( ongoing ) but some date back to 1999.
Shot on both film and digital formats.
